Our May 2003 speaker was Vance Yoder, President Emeritus of Christian Heritage College.
Vance shared some humorous stories about his and his family’s driving experiences. He shared stories all of us could relate to about driving on California highways and the reckless drivers that we see every day.
Vance described Jehu the king of Israel that could be seen coming from a far distance in his chariot – he created a cloud of dust due to his reckless driving (2 Kings 9:20). Jehu had a reputation of being a reckless chariot driver and a reckless person – he was “…not careful to keep the law of the Lord…with all his heart” (2 Kings 10:31).
Vance challenged us to be aware of everything in our lives – even as seemingly insignificant as how we drive. He cited other examples of how we interact with people throughout our day, which affect our witness. We develop our reputation and present our persona based on our behaviors – we can be viewed as reckless in our lives and a poor witness for the Lord – or beyond reproach and an excellent witness.
We have choices to make every day – to Jehu or not to Jehu, that is the question!
